These are transfer lithographs, a historical process in lithography that allows unique advantages for collaboration. We prepared a special paper that Laylah could work on at her studio and mail back to us when the drawings were completed. They are then transferred using a careful process onto a traditional lithography stone, processed, and printed. This allows an artist to work on drawings anywhere, using familiar materials with ease, and create new mark making opportunities such as “rubbing” (seen in the figures shirt) that are not available on traditional stone lithographs.
This is an ongoing project between Obee Editions and Laylah, and we have several other images in the works.
Laylah Ali was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1968, and lives and works in Williamstown, Massachusetts. She received a BA from Williams College and an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Her paintings are known for ambiguous race relations depicted with graphic clarity.
Laylah Ali has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; and Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art; among others. Her work was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2003) and the Whitney Biennial (2004).All materials that come in contact with the print are fully archival.
