Matt Magee "Fact 1 and Fact 2" Lithographs
These lithographs were made in collaboration with Matt Magee during a residency at Obee Editions in 2023. The image titles reference works by Robert Rauschenberg, Factum 1 and Factum 2. Matt worked with Rauschenberg for over 20 years as an archivist. While at Obee Editions, located in Black Mountain NC, Matt was reminiscent of his time with Robert due to the historical connection with Black Mountain College, where he had been a student and instructor. The images are drawn from personal experiences by Matt but exemplify his interest in language, repetition, order, and pattern. The inverted images were actually drawn separately so the careful viewer will find differences in the line work. For the black print, the black is printed which gives the overall affect of rich satin-like quality to the print.
Matt's work references language, organization, structure, as well as the intuitive and the fluid. Best known for his minimal abstract geometric paintings, sculptures and prints, his work explores language symbolically with an emphasis on repetition and nods to art historical precedents.
Matt Magee holds an MFA from Pratt Institute and a BA in Art History from Trinity University. The artist was awarded two resident fellowships (2007 and 2015) at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, a New York State Foundation for the Arts Grant in 2002 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 1991. His work is found in the collections of the Tucson Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Phoenix Art Museum, the Museum Foundation of New Mexico, JP Morgan Chase Collection and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, among many others.
